Heather honey

Description

Heather (reiki) is an important beekeeping plant; it is an evergreen shrub widely spread across the mountainous and rocky landscapes of the island, with its main flowering period in autumn.
Bees are attracted to the nectar and pollen of heather, producing the heather honey of Ios, also known as “reikomelo” or “chontromelo,” an exceptional and rare product.
During its extraction from the honeycombs, heather honey has a dark copper or reddish‑amber color, a rich flavor that is less sweet compared to other types of honey, and slightly bitter notes. Its texture is creamy and relatively thick, while it crystallizes quickly, resulting in crystals that give it a buttery texture and a golden hue — a quality that has led locals to call it “honey butter.”
Heather honey is particularly rich in nutrients, vitamins, and natural enzymes, and is considered highly beneficial for health, with properties that strengthen the immune system and improve energy and endurance. It is often used to invigorate the body and aid digestion, and it is a popular ingredient in traditional recipes of Ios and the wider Greek cuisine.
